Official Report / Commentary

Liam Marshall scored two early tries as Wigan Warriors beat Hull FC 24-10 in the first Betfred Super League match to be played outside of Europe.

Hull lost new signing Bureta Faraimo with a head injury after only two minutes while skipper Danny Houghton and back rower Mark Minichiello went off in the second quarter.

Utility back Jake Connor moved onto the right wing in place of Faraimo but he was nowhere to be seen when Marshall sped down the flank for his first try.

And Connor was well off the pace when Marshall raced clear for his second after centre Oliver Gildart had this time come up with the break.

Sam Tomkins added one conversion and struck an upright with another as the Warriors led 10-0 but winger Fetuli Talanoa produced an acrobatic finish on 23 minutes to pull a try back.

A defensive mix-up between Marshall and Morgan Escare gifted a try to Hull substitute Jordan Abdull. With Marc Sneyd kicking his first conversion, the Black and Whites were suddenly level, although a Tomkins penalty two minutes before half-time enabled Wigan to turn around with a 12-10 lead.

That quickly became 18-10 as substitute Ryan Sutton crashed over for Wigan’s third try four minutes into the second half and Ben Flower barrelled his way over for Wigan’s fourth try on 68 minutes.

Both teams finished the game with 12 men after Sam Tomkins and Josh Griffin were sin-binned by Australian referee Matt Cecchin.

Wigan head coach Shaun Wane said: "It was scrappy. I don’t think we were great. We did some good things but we could have killed the game off in the first half if we had executed.

"I think we lacked a bit of composure, we could have had a decent lead at half-time.

"I’m very happy with the win but we won’t be celebrating that much tonight.”

Hull head coach Lee Radford said: "The first half was difficult with the injuries but I thought there were some special efforts considering players had to play bigger minutes than usual. The injuries killed us ultimately.

"There will be some scans on the injuries and the Dragons doctor is organising them for us. ‘Mint’ (Houghton) and ‘Wattsy’ (Liam Watts) were the only tears, the rest were bangs and there wasn’t anything we could have done about those ones. We lost Bureta to concussion, Jake Connor played on miraculously with a PCL, while Houghton has torn his calf.

"I would never question their effort, though, and they have shown that ability to come back over the last two seasons. I honestly thought we could come back late on but it wasn’t to be."
