Official Report / Commentary

Wigan Warriors made a comfortable start to their title defence with a 26-16 victory over Salford Red Devils in the opening round of 2017 Betfred Super League at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Centre Oliver Gildart scored two first-half tries as the champions warmed up nicely for next Sunday's World Club Challenge clash with Cronulla.

Salford, who survived in Super League by the skin of their teeth last year, were out of the game by half-time, when they trailed 26-0, but rallied in the second half to create some optimism for the new campaign.

Kriss Brining, Junior Sa'u and Michael Dobson touched down for the hosts, but Joe Burgess, George Williams and Thomas Leuluai ensured a comfortable win for the Warriors.

There was further misery for Salford as they lost Sa'u and Robert Lui to head injuries, although the latter was able to return following a concussion assessment.

Shane Wane was happy with the win, but admits his side needs to be better against Cronulla next week.

"It was a good win but we've lots to work on," he said. "We'll review it and get down to some hard work for next week.

"It was hard to concentrate on this game when we've got the World Club Challenge next week. That means a lot to our town and I'll be getting some players in from 30 years ago (Wane's Wigan team-mates from the 1987 World Club Challenge victory over Manly) to talk to them.

"We will need to be a lot better and will be."

Opposite number Ian Watson said: "We've got to be better than that. The first half was poor, we bombed a few opportunities and that's when we need to dig in and grind it out.

"We've got to perform like we did in the second half for 80 minutes. It will be a good opportunity against Huddersfield next Thursday to see if we have learned our lessons from today."
