Official Match Report

Hull Kingston Rovers moved off the bottom of Betfred Super League in stunning fashion as Wigan Warriors fell flat in the first game since head coach Shaun Wane announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the year.

The Warriors produced their best performance of the season to ease past Warrington Wolves at Magic Weekend but they could not match Rovers’ intensity as their eight-game winning run ended at KCOM Craven Park.

The shock 24-8 victory represented Rovers’ biggest scalp since their return to the top flight.

There was no sign of the drama to come as Wigan opened up an 8-0 lead courtesy of Joel Tomkins’ try and two goals from brother Sam.

But Rovers shifted the momentum to take control through tries from Junior Vaivai, Adam Quinlan and Chris Atkin.

And it was Vaivai who finished the Warriors off to complete Hull KR’s first win in five league games.

Wane would not use his announcement on Monday as an excuse for his side's defeat.

"No question it’s been tough, really tough for me and the players," he said.

“But I don’t want that to take it off Hull KR, they were the best team and worthy of the two points. There are no excuses from us at all.

“Good luck to them, they’re singing their song and enjoying it. They had a dig but didn’t have much to beat.

“This is our first real kick in the backside. My players have been good so I’ve not said much to them in the dressing room. We’ll just dust ourselves down and get back into work tomorrow.”

Rovers head coach Tim Sheens said: "They’re the games you remember.

“It’s probably our best effort this year, maybe not our best game.

“All the guys put their bodies on the line both offensively and defensively and we subsequently came away with a great win.”
