Official Match Report

Castleford Tigers showed a few glimpses of their sparkling 2017 form as they came from 8-0 down to beat Hull FC 28-18 in Betfred Super League.

Skipper Michael Shenton scored two tries and could have had a hat-trick as a makeshift winger as the Tigers continued their recovery from their opening-round loss by St Helens.

Man of the match was stand-off Jamie Ellis, who had a role in three of Castleford's five tries on his second appearance since rejoining them, while Joe Wardle enjoyed an eye-catching debut.

It was Hull who moved into an 8-0 lead as Marc Sneyd dummied his way over wide for the game's first try and kicked the touchline conversion before adding a penalty.

But Greg Minikin and Jake Webster crossed for the Tigers, with Luke Gale converting one, before the break.

Two quickfire tries from Mike McMeeken and Shenton and a Gale conversion saw the Tigers lead 20-8 but Bureta Faraimo's try reduced the deficit to eight points.

Shenton's second, with Gale adding the extras, was then followed by Mickey Paea's converted effort but Gale had the final say with a penalty.

Castleford coach Daryl Powell said: "There were some periods in the game where we were really impressive. We played some smart stuff and scored some decent tries.

"When we got to grips with the game, I thought we were excellent. We haven't been fantastic so far but we're getting better and that's the key."

Hull have now suffered back-to-back defeats and coach Lee Radford could not hide his disappointment.

He said: "Performance-wise, there were so many people not at the races, it was scary. You send messages to the same people but for whatever reason keep making the same decisions and that's the frustration as a coach. Hopefully the penny will drop for next week."
