St John Fisher claim national Year 11 title

Caitlin Beevers scored 38 points to help St John Fisher become national champions.

St John Fisher from Dewsbury claimed the Year 11 Girls Champion Schools title for 2017 with a stunning 66-0 win over Shotton Hall of Peterlee.

Caitlin Beevers proved to be the star of the show as she kicked nine goals from nine attempts, as well as scoring a remarkable five tries to take her personal tally to 38 points.

Beevers ran in two early tries before converting Casey Rhodes' first of the match as the Dewsbury school raced into an early 18-0 lead.

Shotton Hall looked to hit back soon after as they applied some pressure to the Fisher line, but the would-be champions stood firm in the face of three back-to-back sets.

They then got a perfect reward for their efforts as Ellie Frain ran 90 metres to score, Beevers adding the goal to make it 24-0 going into half time.

SJF still found time to score two more tries in the closing stages of the first period as Rhodes grabbed her second, before Beevers, who kicked two more first-half goals, completed her hat trick on the hooter for a 36-0 interval lead.

Shotton Hall enjoyed a positive start to the second period as they made inroads into the opposition half, but St John Fisher were soon back in control as Olivia Cummins dived over out wide, Rhodes converting, to make it 42-0.

Then came arguably the try of the game as scrum half Millie Taylor produced a silky show and go before darting through a gap in the Shotton defence.

Rhodes was again successful with the boot, before Beevers notched her fourth try of the game from long range.

She converted her own try for a 54-0 lead, before Ellie Oldroyd found space on the left to go over, Beevers adding the goal again to make it 60-0.

Then, after the final hooter, Player of the Match Beevers helped herself to another try, running the length of the field to round off the scoring with her fifth try, before adding her ninth goal of the game to make it 66-0 at full time.
