England Universities announce final training squad

Competition for places ahead of the 2017 Student World Cup is hotting up...

England Universities have announced their 30-man squad which will train and prepare in the UK with a series of games, before the squad is reduced to a final 24 who will travel to the Student World Cup in Australia in July.

The squad, who will fund the tour themselves, have set a target of £100k to help cover costs, with £20k already raised.

Player sponsorships are now being sold at £150 per player, with all player sponsors being entered into a draw to win a place on the team's shirt. Contact or for further details.

Following a final selection and training session on Saturday, March 11, the 30 players will next meet in April for a two-day camp which culminates in the annual fixture between the student side and the Royal Air Force.

With the Associations Cup on a break for World Cup year, the students will then face a tough test against St Helens Reserves before back-to-back fixtures with the Great Britain Armed Forces, who are also preparing for their own world cup campaign in Australia.

Preparation then concludes with a weekend camp in North Yorkshire, which will involve a fixture against Keighley Cougars Reserves.

Head Coach Colin Baker said: "We've watched all of the selection games through the Regional and Origin programmes and it has been a challenge to pick 30 players from the thousands who play University Rugby League each week and I'd like to thank everyone who has been involved in selection up to this point for their efforts.

24 players will travel to Australia for the Student World Cup

He added: "Nonetheless, we are confident that we have the right mix of players across all positions who will work hard to show us why they deserve a place on the plane to Australia.

"There is good competition for places and a strong work ethic.

"Over the coming months, I am looking forward to working with all of the players to turn them into a tight knit, cohesive team."

As in previous years, the squad has been selected from a diverse list of Universities, with players picked on merit.

Twenty members of the squad have already gained England experience during the 2015 or 2016 programmes and many of the players are regulars across the Kingstone Press Championship and League 1.
