York cause cup upset against Rochdale

A round-up of all of Sunday's action in the fourth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup, with wins for York City Knights, Featherstone Rovers, Hull KR, Halifax and Doncaster.

York City Knights pulled off a cup upset in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup fourth round, as they dismissed Championship side Rochdale Hornets at Bootham Crescent.

With the scores locked at 20-20 going into the final quarter of the match, it was set to be a tense finish but League 1 York pinched the win four minutes from time as Bobby Tyson-Wilson’s converted try ensured a 26-20 victory.

Veteran half-back Jonny Presley gave the Knights an early lead before Joe Batchelor scored on the 20-minute mark to put the hosts 14-0 up.

However Rochdale hit back with Miles Greenwood and former Challenge Cup winner Chris Riley both scoring to bring them two points behind. But Joe Porter’s try just before the interval gave York an eight- point advantage at half-time.

The Hornets were quick to respond after the interval and a quick-fire double from Rob Massam and Riley saw them level matters at 20-20.

But former Coventry Bears man Batchelor secured a dramatic and memorable win for the Knights with a 76th minute winner from close range.

Featherstone Rovers dumped out five-time Challenge Cup winners Bradford Bulls, as they secured a 21-13 win at Odsal.

Josh Hardcastle scored after just five minutes for Rovers, but 6-0 is how it stayed until half-time in the West Yorkshire derby.

Evan Hodgson’s converted try got the Bulls back on terms in the 48th minute before Kyle Briggs edged Featherstone 7-6 up with a 55th minute drop goal.

Jason Walton’s converted try then put Fev further ahead before Kyle Briggs added another two to put Rovers 15-7 clear with seven minutes left on the clock.

Ian Hardman’s effort two minutes later finally put the game to bed although Bradford did have the last say as Johnny Campbell scored the Bulls’ second try of the game, a minute from time.

2015 Challenge Cup finalists Hull KR romped to a 48-10 win over Sheffield Eagles as they secured their fifth-round spot.

Tries from Thomas Minns, Shaun Lunt, Adam Quinlan gave Rovers a 18-10 half-time advantage, with Dane Chisholm and Garry Lo scoring for the Eagles.

The hosts pulled away in the second period, with Lunt, Maurice Blair, Ben Cockayne, Jamie Ellis and James Greenwood all adding scores for Tim Sheens’ men.

Halifax enjoyed a 20-6 win over League 1 outfit Hunslet, with Ed Barber, Chester Butler and Rob Worrincy all scoring for the hosts.

Kieran Cross scored four tries as Doncaster defeated University of Gloucestershire All Golds 48-22 in an all-League 1 clash at the Keepmoat Stadium. Liam Welham and Louis Sheriff both scored braces for the hosts.

Whitehaven’s match with Oxford had been postponed yesterday, with a waterlogged pitch preventing play in today’s sixth fourth round game. The match will be re-arranged for a later date.
